When sourcing tableware, buyers naturally spend time checking shape, weight, finish and price. But another question deserves just as much attention:
What exactly comes into contact with the food?
This matters because a modern cutlery product may contain more than stainless steel. A children's spoon, for example, might combine stainless steel with silicone or plastic. Decorative tableware may include coatings, printing, adhesives or ceramic components.
For European buyers, food-contact materials fall under a regulatory framework designed to ensure that materials do not transfer substances to food in quantities that could endanger health or unacceptably affect the food itself.
The practical lesson for buyers is not that every product requires the same test.
It is that material, intended use and product construction need to be clearly understood before testing and documentation are discussed.
Consider two products:
A one-piece stainless steel spoon has a relatively simple material structure.
A stainless steel spoon with a printed plastic handle has more variables. Buyers may need to understand the plastic material, printing method and which parts can reasonably come into contact with food during normal use.
This is particularly relevant for baby and kids tableware, where buyers and consumers generally expect a high level of product information and safety control.
Manufacturers can make this process easier by maintaining clear material specifications and controlling changes during production. If the approved sample uses one material but mass production changes to another without proper review, documentation can quickly become meaningless.
